The beginning…
When we discovered we were pregnant at 4 weeks 3 days, we were EXTREMELY excited! This is a very wanted pregnancy and we couldn’t wait to tell everyone! Which we did, by 5 weeks most people knew! We couldn’t keep such exciting news a secret!
Early on I had blood tests to monitor the hormone levels and it was a bit rocky! The levels didn’t do what they were expected to do, but they didn’t drop so no one was really sure what was happening! However, we had a scan at 6 weeks and we saw our babies heart beat!
After that things went along as normal, at our 12 week scan things looked fine, we loved seeing our baby up on screen. Watching its personality already showing! Teasing the technician by turning her head away JUST as they started to get the right view.
Then 2 weeks ago we went for our 20 week anatomy scan. We were really excited about being able to see our baby again, and we were hoping to find out whether it was a boy or a girl. It didn’t matter which it was, we just REALLY wanted to know! Again, our bubbas personality was shining through, as the technician was looking at her face, checking for (cleft palate I think) our baby lay perfectly still… and covered her face with her hands, refusing to move them!
We had a bit of a giggle. Then as soon as the technician gave up on that for theĀ moment, our baby started wriggling all over the place! Very entertaining for us, but not so much for the technician!! ![]()
The scan went on for quite awhile, less to do with our baby not co operating and more to do with the technicians lack of experience I think… nothing against her, she was doing a good job and we were quite happy watching our baby while she did her stuff, however, when other people were called in to look at things, it got a little concerning…
They explained to us that they had found ‘concerns’… from what they could see only the left half of our babies heart had developed and the stomach was up in the chest area…
Yesterday, at 22 weeks, we had another scan, this time at the hospital, with specialists. They confirmed what the other scan had found… Our baby has hypoplastic right heart syndrome and a diaphragmatic hernia. They encouraged us to have an amnio done (where they stick a needle in me to take fluid from around the baby) to check whether the problem was chromosomal…
From what I could understand from what they said yesterday, if it is chromosomal, there is nothing they will/can do and if our baby girl makes it to birth she will either die during birth or shortly after. But if it is not chromosomal, then there is stuff they will try. I don’t really understand much yet… We hope to get the amnio results back tomorrow and I hope to know more after that…
They did talk about termination, but we had already decided we would fight as long as our baby was fighting…
